Below, you will find step-by-step instructions for painting a simple yet beautiful Autumn Sunrise Landscape on a perfectly natural canvas: a real wood slice. If you have my Autumn Sunrise kit, you can follow right along using the colors provided. However, please feel free to use any colors that speak to your heart! It’s your art, your landscape, and your imagination. Let's dive in!
Step 1
Squeeze a little Cobalt Blue and Titanium White onto your palette and mix them together to create a beautiful light blue. Using brush #4 and this color, paint the sky area, being careful to leave the sun unpainted. Feel free to mix your colors on the palette, or you can even blend them right on the wood slice!
Step 2
Next, use white paint to fill in the area right around the sun. Without washing your brush (just wipe off the excess paint with a paper towel), gently blend the white into the blue sky. Don't worry if you add too much white! You can easily adjust it by adding a touch of blue back in and blending them together with the same brush. A size 4 brush is perfect for this step!
Step 3
Now, using your Titanium White, carefully paint in the sun. This will give it a nice, bright base for the next steps!
Step 4
Next, use Vermilion and Lemon Yellow to paint the fields on the left and right, as well as the area just in front of the forest line. You can mix these colors on your art palette, or blend them directly on the wood slice! If you choose to mix them right on the wood, allow your brushstrokes to stay bold and try not to over-blend them. These visible strokes add a beautiful, natural feeling to the painting that perfectly complements your wood slice.
Step 5
Now, take a little Burnt Sienna and paint along the inner edges of the left and right fields, right where they touch the water. This helps create a beautiful, natural separation between the vibrant autumn grass and the river!
Step 6
Next, fill in the forest area using Ultramarine Blue. To give the trees some beautiful texture, add a few playful splashes of white and blue paint. As an optional touch, try leaving some of your bold brushstrokes imperfectly blended! Embracing those visible marks adds a wonderful, natural feeling to the piece.
Step 7
Now, using the same colors you mixed for the sky, go ahead and paint the river. To bring the water to life and give it a gentle sense of movement, add a few splashes of white paint and just slightly blend them in!
Step 8
Next, take a little white paint and add a few gentle brushstrokes right along the edges where the water touches the autumn fields. This creates a beautiful, soft ripple effect along the riverbank!
Step 9
Now, let's make that sun glow! Using Lemon Yellow and Titanium White, paint over the sun. Apply the white paint to the very center, and use the yellow paint around the outer edges. Gently blend the two colors where they meet to create a beautifully warm, radiant sunrise.
Step 10
Next, using Raw Umber and just a touch of Lemon Yellow, gently paint a few small patches of grass across the fields. This simple detail adds a wonderful sense of texture and life to your autumn landscape!
Step 11
For the perfect finishing touch, choose any dark color you like and gently paint a few little birds soaring high in the sky. This simple detail brings a wonderful sense of life and freedom to your beautiful completed landscape!
Step 12
Once your painting is completely dry, take your largest brush and apply a smooth coat of acrylic varnish. Allow this first coat to dry completely, and then apply a second coat. This final step will beautifully seal your wood slice and protect your gorgeous artwork for years to come!
